Project Spotlight: Complete Upgrade on Water Damaged Roof in Rochester NY

When homeowners in Rochester NY noticed significant water damage impacting their roof, they called Stellar’s roof inspection experts to take a look at the problem. Here’s how Stellar’s team brought their home to life and kept it safe from an imminent water damage threat.

Roofing Inspection

An initial inspection of the roof revealed a concerning amount of dark spots on the roof. These dark spots were especially prominent in the crevices of the roof between the shingles. Over time, gravity caused water to pool up in the deeper crevices of the roof, building up more and more damage and creating the dark spots our inspectors were seeing.

On top of this, there were several sections of the roof with lifted shingles and flashing. This left the underside of the roof significantly unprotected against rain and storms. This concern about the flashing was especially important to address because the homeowner had a skylight, which could lead to leaks in the main interior of the home if unaddressed.

The Teardown Process

It was clear that to properly address this damaged roof, the only option would be a complete roof replacement. One concern that the team had was that the decking underneath the water-logged shingles would be significantly rotted due to the intake of water over the years. This presented more concern for the interior of the home, where leaks could appear and cause issues down the line. Therefore, the first thing to do after the shingles were removed would be to completely inspect the decking and ensure that any rotten wood was fully replaced.

Once the decking was revealed, there were several large boards that were showing signs of wear and water damage. These boards were promptly removed, and replaced with new decking. During this part of the process, the team also removed the sun roof, along with the flashing around the chimney. These would soon be replaced with a much higher quality material to prevent water intake. Finally, a few parts of the siding were taken off temporarily.

Roof Installation

With the decking replaced and the skylight removed, it was time to install the new shingles. The customer chose to go with the IKO Dynasty shingles, which are a high quality shingle known for their durability and longevity. The customer chose the Atlantic Blue color, a darker blue shingle which would match well with their home’s lighter blue siding.

Before the shingles were installed, two layers of protective underlayment were installed on top of the decking. This would give the roof long term protection against storms, ice, and water damage. At Stellar, we use both Ice and Water underlayment and Roofgaurd II underlayment to ensure our protection for the homeowners goes above and beyond the quality they can find anywhere else.

During this part of the process, the team also fortified the home’s siding against water damage by installing underlayment where the siding had been removed. Since the siding and roofing connected along several points of the house, the team knew that the siding could also be at risk of damage in case a storm hits. This extra protection provided the homeowners exactly what their property needed to stay sturdy for years to come.

Next, new flashing was installed on the chimney as well as around the spot where the old skylight was located. This would provide a water tight seal against weather damage and increase the reliability of the roof. It also provides aesthetic benefits, making this homeowner’s roof stand out and really pop in the neighborhood. Once the flashing was complete, the team installed a brand new skylight on the home. Finally, the shingles were installed on top of the underlayment. Our team worked carefully to ensure each layer was applied properly, with care taken to treat the roof as if it were our own.

The Final Result

When the project was completed, there were several new features on the home’s exterior that really stood out. First, the home had a brand new skylight with improved flashing. While skylights can traditionally be a harder spot to waterproof, Stellar’s expert installations make that risk negligible. This allowed the homeowners to enjoy the benefits of a skylight without the risk traditionally associated with them.

Next, the brand new Atlantic Blue shingles really popped against the rest of the house. Compared to the old shingles, these ones are fresh, clean, and designed to last for decades. Finally, the flashing around the chimney provides an added boost the home’s exterior appearance, and will prevent water intake.
