In Syracuse, moss was found growing under this local homeowner’s shingles, it was time for a big upgrade. They contacted Stellar Roofing’s Syracuse office for a full inspection to see what the best option would be for their home.
The Initial Inspection
Stellar has recently opened a new office in Syracuse, New York. Now, residents are contacting us to inspect their homes when noticing signs of water damage such as moss and lifted shingles.
Our roofing expert Dan visited these homeowners to find the best solution for this aging roof. The moss was the biggest concern that needed to be addressed as soon as possible. Dan got right to work performing a thorough inspection of the home. First he used a drone to get a full overview of the roof and determine what the exterior looked like. Then, he went into the home’s attic to examine any damage to the interior of the home, such as leaks or water spots on the decking.
When the inspection was complete, Dan gave his report to the homeowners. With moss growing under the shingles, there was clearly a breach in the integrity of the roof. This caused water damage and allowed moss to accumulate over time. In addition to this, dark spots on the decking that Dan saw in the attic showed the damage had reached deeper than just the shingles. Due to Syracuse’s harsh winters, the risk of the damage becoming worse later in the year was very likely.
The Project Plan
With the inspection complete, it was time to work with the homeowners to find the best solution to their problems. The homeowners decided on a complete roof replacement, looking to completely overhaul the structural concerns in the roof that had lead to the water damage in the first place. After reviewing all of Stellar’s product offerings, they decided to go with IKO Dynasty shingles in Monaco Red.
The project plan was mapped out by project manager Jena. Under her direction, the team was able to formulate a plan to install this new roof in an efficient manner, while still ensuring the highest quality of installation.
Roof Replacement
Since the decking was severely impacted by water damage, the first course of action would be to remove the shingles and replace the old, moldy decking. Once this step was completed, the team began installing waterproofing to provide the home with protection against water damage that would last for decades. They used two layers of underlayment to ensure the highest level of protection for the decking.
With the underlayment installed, it was time to install the shingles. Each layer was placed on top of the underlayment and installed into the decking using cap nails designed for roofing. These ensured that every layer was tightly secured to the roof, with no risk of coming loose for several decades. It also created a tight seal between each layer of shingle, preventing water damage at every level.
Roof ventilation was then applied to the top of the roof, using lo-omni ridge vents. This would allow hot air and moisture to escape from the roof, keeping the roof protected from internal moisture and mold for a long time. Hip & Ridge 12 Shingles were also applied to the ridge and hip lines of the roof, providing a finished appearance and protecting against leaks in high-stress areas like corners. Finally, flashing was applied to the chimney to give the roof a water-tight seal.
The Finished Result
When the project was completed, these Syracuse homeowners were left with a stylish red roof that complimented their lighter tan siding. The new and improved look of the home drastically improved the home’s curb appeal. In addition to this, all the measures that had been taken to reduce water damage in the home had provided a water-tight seal for the roof and attic. Any black mold that was growing on the decking was now gone, giving the homeowners a healthier and happier home to live in.
