Initial Inspection
For the first step in the process, Tyler, one of our roofing experts, visited the homeowners for a complete damage assessment and home inspection. This process usually takes around 1-2 hours, to ensure that our experts have enough time to examine all areas of the roof that could potentially be damaged. This meant that not only would Tyler be doing a full inspection on the exterior of the roof, he would also be inspecting the interior via the home’s attic.
Due to the weather, the Tyler needed to get below a few layers of snow that had accumulated on the rooftop. Syracuse is known for long and cold winters, so it wasn’t surprising at all that the homeowner’s roof was at a greater risk of damage from snow, ice, and water over the years. Underneath the layers of snow on the exterior of the roof, there were several spots where water damage had accumulated.
When Tyler spoke with the homeowners, the damage from the snow that had built up over the years was the primary concern. If left unchecked, it could cause leaks and further damage to the interior of the home. This meant that waiting for a replacement was going to be a costlier option for the homeowners. They decided to move forward with a full replacement, choosing the IKO Dynasty shingles in Granite Black.
Roof Removal
With the project ready to go, Project Manager Bryan took on the job and organized his crew. The first step in the process was to get all the existing shingles removed from the roof. The team placed protective tarp down on the property, and then began the tear off.
Once the shingles were completely removed, the team gave the decking a second inspection. This would ensure that any damaged decking was spotted before new shingles were added, so that it could be replaced with a sturdier, fresher wood. Since water damage from snow was a major concern for these homeowners, our team took extra care to ensure that the decking was installed with the highest quality of materials that would last them for decades.
Roof Replacement
Once the decking was installed, the team applied two layers of underlayment to serve as a strong waterproof layer underneath the shingles. These would keep the decking safe from any water intake and prevent water from building up and accumulating under the shingles.
Next, the team began placing down the shingles over the underlayment and installed them using ridge cap nails. These nails are perfect for roofing installations, and are the highest grade to ensure that the shingles will stay in place reliably for many years, through many conditions.
Finally, the ridge vents were installed on the home. This was done to ensure proper attic ventilation. Drip edge flashing was also installed to allow water to be directed away from any areas that were particularly at risk of a leak, such as where the shingles met the chimney. Our team puts our expert craftsmanship to work here especially, as good drip edge flashing can mean the difference between a 5-year roof and a 20-year or longer roof.
When the roof replacement was completed, the customer was completely satisfied with the results. They had a new roof that was protected from future water damage, which was especially important in a city like Syracuse, where inclement weather, snow, rain, and hail, can all increase the risk of water damage to the underside of a roof.
